Luoyang 6-Day Tour: White Horse Temple & Erlitou Site
Luoyang 6-day tour covering White Horse Temple and Erlitou Site and Chongdu Valley. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: White Horse Temple
Morning visit: start from the Shanmen Gate and the Hall of Heavenly Kings to the Great Buddha Hall, carefully following the central axis, then proceed to the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard; at noon, try the local cuisine, and in the afternoon visit Buddhist halls with Burmese and Indian styles to experience the exotic charm of the thousand-year-old temple.
Attraction introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is the [0]. [0] is located in the eastern part of [1] city and was first built during the Yongping years of the Eastern Han Dynasty. It was constructed to commemorate the White Horse carrying the scriptures and the initial transmission of Buddhism to the Central Plains, and it is honored as 'China's First Ancient Temple,' being the first official Buddhist temple built after Buddhism was introduced to China. Inside the temple, the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard, the Great Buddha Hall, and the Hall of Heavenly Kings are laid out along the central axis, with red walls and green cypresses, and incense has been burning continuously for over two thousand years. It is worth mentioning that the temple also has Buddhist halls with exotic styles built as donations from countries like Myanmar, Thailand, and India, presenting a unique view of the spread and return of Buddhist culture. My understanding is that you should first observe the main halls along the central axis, then walk to the Qiyun Pagoda Courtyard, and finally visit the side halls with exotic styles to feel the cultural integration; visiting early in the morning when there are few people is best, as the morning light on red walls and ancient cypresses is most atmospheric and it also helps avoid peak travel group times.
Tips: Please keep quiet and dress neatly when entering the temple. Photography and touching religious instruments are generally prohibited inside the halls. Donations are welcomed. Visitors generally find that the foreign-style Buddhist halls (Thai/Burmese/Indian courtyard) are very photogenic and more spacious than expected; please note that the international temple area requires considerable walking, so be prepared. Depending on the situation, carry some small change and packaged snacks for when the signals are weak or for temporary needs, so you don't have to look for food when hungry.
Day 2: Erlitou
Depart from the hotel early in the morning straight to Erlitou. First, listen to the guide explain the background and highlights, then explore freely at a leisurely pace and take additional photos according to your interests. After lunch, take a short rest, and return to the hotel in the evening to conserve energy for the next day.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes the Erlitou attraction. The Erlitou site is located in Luoyang Yanshi and is acclaimed by scholars as 'the earliest China.' It is a large city site from the mid to late Xia Dynasty, where turquoise dragon-shaped artifacts, bronze jue, bronze ding, and other significant relics were unearthed, revealing the appearance of the first royal capital of the Huaxia. The turquoise dragon-shaped artifact is inlaid with over two thousand turquoise pieces and is known as 'the first dragon of Huaxia,' serving as important evidence of dragon worship in China. The Erlitou Site Museum presents the archaeological site vividly and is an indispensable stop for studying the origins of Chinese civilization. In my understanding, having a preliminary understanding of the academic controversies regarding the 'Xia capital' before viewing the exhibits will provide deeper insight; the museum's exhibition is carefully curated and worth seeing slowly.
Tips: There is a large temperature difference in the mountains between morning and evening, and it is windy at the summit. A windproof jacket and warm inner layers are essential. Feedback from tourists generally indicates that most visitors believe Erlitou is worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow down, listen to the guide's explanations, and leave time for the details that touch you most and the best photo spots. Considering the actual situation, mountain weather can change suddenly, so a windproof jacket is more practical than anything else. Choose shoes that are slip-resistant and comfortable; it is better to take fewer photos than to twist your ankle.
Day 3: Chongdugou
Today's summer retreat journey has a leisurely pace, focusing on visiting the vast bamboo forests and cascading waterfalls; the afternoon is free for your own arrangements, and in the evening, you will stay at a farmhouse to rest.
Attraction Introduction: This stop brings us to Chongdugou, which is located in Luanchuan. It is famous for its vast bamboo forests, waterfalls, streams, and the farming culture of western Henan. It is one of the few 'Jiangnan water town' style summer retreat destinations in the area. The scenic area is divided into the Jinji River and the Dicui River zones. Jinji River is known for its waterfalls, with splashing water that is refreshing and pleasant; Dicui River features continuous bamboo forests, creating a sea of greenery as you stroll through. Here, you can stay at farmhouses, taste wild mountain vegetables, and experience authentic rural life in western Henan. The pace is slow, making it particularly suitable for family leisure trips and summer vacations. My understanding is to slow down the pace and not rush to see the spots—walking in the bamboo forests and sitting by the streams is the proper way to enjoy Chongdugou; visiting in summer is most comfortable, with such coolness you won’t want to leave.
Tips: Signal may be poor inside the canyon, so arrange the meeting points with your guide in advance and avoid going alone. Tourists generally feedback that most consider Chongdugou worth a special visit. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide’s explanations, and save time for the most touching details and the best photo spots. Based on actual situations, avoid impulsive shopping—if you see ‘limited time offer,’ wait three minutes first; if you really want to buy souvenirs, make sure to choose official stores and keep the receipts for peace of mind.
