Day 1: Free activities

Early in the morning, enter Shaolin Temple to first listen to an explanation of the history of the Zen ancestral hall, then watch a martial arts performance and visit the pagoda forest; in the afternoon, enjoy free activities—either climb Mount Song Shaoshi Mountain or revisit the permanent temple for additional photos, then return in the evening.

Friendly reminder: There is no fixed schedule on free activity days. Before going out, note the hotel's location and the meeting time, make sure your phone is fully charged, and bring a power bank. Visitors generally feedback that frequent travelers like to reserve free activity days for local food and alley exploration to experience the most authentic city life. Based on actual circumstances, when traveling in a group, the biggest fear is rushing through attractions. Listening to explanations is the essence, as the cultural stories behind each site are often more memorable than photos. If you don’t understand something, ask the tour guide on the spot.

Day 2: Henan Museum

Today's Henan Museum cultural tour offers a two-hour overview of the main lineage of Chinese civilization, focusing on national treasures such as the Jiahu bone flute and the cloud-patterned bronze container; the afternoon is free for your own arrangements, with rest in the evening.

Attractions introduction: One of the highlights in the itinerary is Henan Museum. Henan Museum is a landmark of Central Plains civilization, housing over 170,000 cultural relics. It systematically presents 'Early China' along the main theme of 'the mighty Huaxia, choosing the center to establish the capital'. Among its treasures, the Jiahu bone flute is the earliest playable instrument discovered so far, rewriting the history of Chinese music; the Duling square ding and cloud-patterned bronze container are pinnacle works of bronze casting in the Shang and Zhou dynasties; the Lady Hao owl-shaped zun boasts a majestic shape and tells the legendary story of Lady Hao, the wife of King Wu Ding of the Shang Dynasty; other national treasures include the lotus crane square vase and the gold slips of Empress Wu Zetian. It is recommended to follow a guide or rent an audio guide. Within two hours, you can get a comprehensive view of the main line of Chinese civilization. My understanding is that it is most efficient to first go straight to a few top treasures for satisfaction, and then follow the chronological order to explore systematically. Crowds in front of the national treasure display cases are common, so learning the location of the key treasures in advance and going directly to the highlights saves the most time.

Tips: Museums generally require reservations or ticket exchange with an ID card, so please check the opening hours and reservation methods in advance. Visitors commonly report that most believe Henan Museum is worth a special trip. It is suggested to slow down, listen to the guide, and leave time for the details that impress you the most and the best photo opportunities. Depending on the situation, the best times for photos are early morning or late afternoon—soft light with fewer people in the morning, golden light at dusk; noon lighting is harsh and crowded, so it's better to rest at that time.

Luoyang Departure: Yuntai Mountain, Hongshi Gorge and Zhuyu Peak, 4 Days 3 Nights

Four days from Luoyang. Hongshi Gorge runs one way, a slot of red rock that lets you walk forward only. The ticket and shuttle pass last three days, so nothing is rushed: one day for the gorge, one for the waterfalls, and the last morning up the spiral tunnels to Zhuyu Peak at 1,308 metres.

Three days from Luoyang. The Dengfeng plain is called the centre of heaven and earth, and the name only makes sense once you have seen the three together: the pagoda forest at Shaolin, the two Han cypresses at Songyang Academy, the eleven courtyards on the axis of Zhongyue Temple.
