Luoyang 4-Day Tour: Jiguan Cave & Laojun Mountain
Luoyang 4-day tour covering Jiguan Cave and Laojun Mountain. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Free activities
Early in the morning, enter Longtan Grand Canyon and enjoy a leisurely walk along the creek trail in the cool air, which is especially refreshing in summer; in the afternoon, enjoy free activities, and you can catch up on photographing the narrow sky; return in the evening.
Warm tips: On free activity days, taking a taxi or walking is convenient. Check your destination routes in advance and mark the shops and attractions you want to visit on the map. Tourists generally feel that free activity days are the most relaxed, allowing them to go at their own pace. Based on the actual situation, if you want authentic food, go deeper into the alleys. The queues and taste at the main entrance of the scenic area are generally not great; for souvenirs, ask for prices first and then compare. Local supermarkets often have more authentic products.
Day 2: Jiguan Cave
Today's geological trip: Follow the guide to learn about the formation of karst caves and the wonders of stalactites; in the afternoon, you can explore the surrounding area, and rest in the evening.
Attractions introduction: Today's itinerary includes 1 attraction. The attraction is the karst cave in Luanchuan. Inside the cave, the stalactites have a variety of shapes. Stalagmites, stone pillars, and stone flowers transform into splendid colors under the lights. The temperature is constant and comfortable all year round, warm in winter and cool in summer. The cave's attractions are densely packed, changing scene with every step. With the explanation, you can understand the marvelous geological changes over hundreds of millions of years. It complements the one-cave-one-gorge experience and is a classic geological wonder route in western Henan. My understanding is, remember to follow the guide inside the cave. The formation and naming of stalactites are very interesting, and you might miss the highlights if you look around by yourself. The ground inside the cave is slippery, and some areas are low, so wear non-slip shoes and watch your head.
Tips: Many mountain paths are slippery. Pay special attention to shifting your center of gravity backward and slowing down your steps when going downhill. Knee pads may be useful. Most visitors generally respond that the attraction is worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. Given the circumstances, long trips are prone to dehydration, so keep a water bottle with you and drink in small amounts frequently. On the first night at high altitudes or in the mountains, avoid washing your hair or taking a long bath to give your body some time to adjust.
Day 3: Laojun Mountain
In the morning, take the cable car up Laojun Mountain and visit the Jin Ding Taoist Temple complex. On clear days, you may encounter a sea of clouds. Have a light meal at the mountaintop at noon. In the afternoon, walk along the Ten-Mile Painting Screen Trail and overlook the mountains from the glass observation deck. In the evening, descend the mountain and check into a hotel.
Attraction Introduction: One highlight in the itinerary is Laojun Mountain, located in Luoyang Luanchuan County. It is the main peak of the Funiu Mountains and a famous Taoist mountain, traditionally considered the place where the founder of Taoism, Laozi, went into seclusion for cultivation. The Jin Ding Taoist Temple complex stands atop a peak over 2,000 meters above sea level. With its golden tiles and red walls, and the rolling sea of clouds, it is praised as “a feast for the eyes beyond the world, a glimpse of earthly prosperity.” The Ten-Mile Painting Screen Trail is the essence of the trip. This sky-high plank road, suspended on a cliff, offers changing views of peak forests, the sea of clouds, and the sunrise. You can take a two-stage cable car up the mountain; on sunny days, you can watch the sea of clouds and sunrise from the peak. In winter, it is a very popular spot in central China for enjoying the snow. My understanding is that you should take the cable car early to secure good lighting at Jin Ding and the Ten-Mile Painting Screen; the mountaintop is windy and cold, so a waterproof jacket and thermos are essential. For those afraid of heights, avoid the glass viewing deck.
Tips: The hiking sections have many stairs and steep slopes, so wear non-slip sports shoes. Those with difficulty walking are suggested to use the cable car both ways. Visitors generally agree that the sea of clouds and sunrise at Jin Ding are the main attractions, with many staying on the mountain overnight to catch the dawn. Be reminded that the mountaintop has large temperature differences and cable car lines can be long, so during peak season, go early. Plan your time well; arrive five to ten minutes before the gathering time. It’s better to let the vehicle wait for people than for people to wait for the vehicle—don’t make everyone wait for you.
Day 4: Departure
Transfer to the station/airport per your departure, ending a pleasant journey.
Friendly tips: Pack the night before and keep ID, power bank and souvenirs together; allow extra time for the station/airport; bring your ID and stay with your guide, noting the meeting time and place. Traveler feedback — Return-day travelers remind: pack ID and souvenirs the night before; allow extra time. Practical note — Return-day tip: pack ID, power bank and souvenirs the night before; allow extra time—mountain roads are unpredictable.
