Zhengzhou 3-Day Tour: Jiguan Cave & Longmen Grottoes
Zhengzhou 3-day tour covering Jiguan Cave and Longmen Grottoes. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Jiguan Cave
Morning tour: go into the karst cave to see the various shapes of stalactites; have lunch nearby at noon, and in the afternoon you can visit [0] along the way. Each cave and gorge complements the other. Return in the evening.
Attraction introduction: Today's itinerary includes [1] attraction. [1] is the karst cave in Luanchuan. Inside the cave, the stalactites have countless forms. Stalagmites, stone pillars, and stone flowers under the lights transform into gorgeous colors. The cave maintains a constant temperature all year round, warm in winter and cool in summer. The cave has dense spots of interest, changing scenery with every step. With a guide, you can understand the amazing geological changes over hundreds of millions of years. Together with [0], each cave and gorge complement each other, forming a classic geological wonder route in western Henan. My understanding is to remember to follow the guide when entering the cave; the formation and naming of the stalactites are very interesting, and you might miss the highlights if you look on your own. The cave floor is slippery, and some areas are low, so wear non-slip shoes and watch your head.
Tips: The mountain paths have many steps and steep slopes, so be sure to wear non-slip sports shoes. Those with mobility issues are advised to use the cable car. Generally, visitors feel that most tourists think [1] is worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide, and listen to explanations, leaving time for the details that move you most and the best spots for photos. Depending on your situation, bring some change and small snacks with you, as cell signal may be poor or you might need supplies on short notice. Don’t wait until you are hungry to look for something to eat.
Day 2: Longmen Grottoes
Early in the morning, enter Longmen Grottoes, take advantage of the few people to first see Binyang Three Caves and Lotus Cave, then climb Fengxian Temple to admire the Great Buddha; have lunch nearby at noon, then in the afternoon visit Dongshan Grottoes and Xiangshan Temple, and take photos at the Yi River in the evening, ending a fulfilling day.
Attraction Introduction: A major highlight arranged in the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes, Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliff faces along both banks of the Yi River south of Luoyang City, and construction continued since Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang, spanning multiple dynasties including Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang. Currently, there are more than 2,300 niches, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscribed steles. The most impressive is the Vairocana Buddha of Fengxian Temple, which is over seventeen meters high, with a full face and eyes full of compassion, said to have been carved based on the likeness of Empress Wu Zetian. It represents the pinnacle of the stone carving art of the High Tang period. Together with the Dunhuang Mogao Caves and the Yungang Grottoes in Datong, it is considered one of China's three major grottoes and is also a World Cultural Heritage site. When visiting, walk south along the Yi River trail from the Western Mountain Grottoes; Binyang Three Caves, Ten-Thousand Buddha Cave, and Lotus Cave each have their own highlights. Crossing the bridge to the Dongshan Worship Terrace offers a panoramic view. My understanding is that in the morning, first see the main grottoes of the Western Mountain to appreciate the Great Buddha while there are few people; in the afternoon, go to Dongshan to view from the terrace—the light and angles are best for photos. Walking along both banks of the Yi River requires retracing steps, so a pair of comfortable shoes can save a lot of effort.
Tips: The grotto area has strong ultraviolet rays, so bring a sunhat and sunscreen on sunny days. The visiting route is long, so remember to stay hydrated. Tourists generally feedback that most find the Vairocana Buddha most impressive, the sunset at the Western Mountain is best for photography; walking both banks of the Yi River requires retracing steps, so wearing comfortable shoes and allowing half a day is recommended. Based on actual conditions, weather in the mountains can change suddenly, so a windbreaker is very practical; shoes must be non-slip and comfortable—it's better to take fewer photos than to sprain your ankle.
Day 3: Departure
Transfer to the station/airport per your departure, ending a pleasant journey.
Friendly tips: Pack the night before and keep ID, power bank and souvenirs together; allow extra time for the station/airport; bring your ID and stay with your guide, noting the meeting time and place. Traveler feedback — Return-day travelers remind: pack ID and souvenirs the night before; allow extra time. Practical note — Return-day tip: pack ID, power bank and souvenirs the night before; allow extra time—mountain roads are unpredictable.
