Day 1: Chongdugou

Today's summer retreat trip has a relaxed pace, focusing on viewing vast bamboo forests and cascading waterfalls; the afternoon is free for your own plans, and in the evening, you will stay at a farmhouse to rest.

Attraction introduction: This stop is at Chongdugou, located in Luanchuan, famous for its vast bamboo forests, waterfalls, and the farming culture of Western Henan. It is one of the few 'Jiangnan water town'-style summer leisure destinations in the area. The scenic area is divided into the Jinji River and Dicui River sections. Jinji River is known for its waterfalls, with splashing water and a refreshing atmosphere, while Dicui River is covered with continuous bamboo groves, where strolling reveals endless greenery. Here you can stay at farmhouses, taste wild vegetables, and experience authentic life in Western Henan mountain villages. The pace is relaxed, making it especially suitable for family slow travel and summer vacations. My understanding is to slow down and not rush through the sights—walking in the bamboo forest and sitting by the stream is the proper way to enjoy Chongdugou; visiting in summer is most comfortable, with refreshing coolness that makes you reluctant to leave.

Tips: Signal may be weak inside the canyon, so arrange a meeting point with your guide in advance and do not go alone. Feedback from visitors generally indicates that most believe Chongdugou is worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow down, listen to the guide, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. Respect local customs according to the actual situation; dress appropriately in religious sites and do not gesture randomly. A simple greeting can bring kindness.

Day 2: Longmen Grottoes

In the morning, head to Longmen Grottoes, carefully observe the Faxiang Temple's Vairocana Buddha along the Yi River trail from the Western Hills Caves, then cross the bridge to the Eastern Hills Worship Platform to view the panoramic scenery; at noon, enjoy a Luoyang water banquet, in the afternoon tour Xiangshan Temple and Baiyuan, and return to the hotel in the evening.

Attraction introduction: A major highlight in the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliffs on both sides of the Yi River in the south of Luoyang city. Construction began after Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang and continued through the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, and other dynasties. There are currently more than 2,300 caves, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscriptions and steles. The most impressive is the Vairocana Buddha of Faxiang Temple, which is more than seventeen meters tall, with a full face and compassionate eyes. It is said to have been sculpted based on Empress Wu Zetian's appearance and represents the pinnacle of Tang Dynasty stone carving art. Together with the Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong Yungang Grottoes, it is one of China’s three major grottoes and a World Cultural Heritage site. When visiting, walk south from the Western Hills Caves along the Yi River trail; Binyang Three Caves, Wanfo Cave, and Lotus Cave each have their highlights. Crossing the bridge to the Eastern Hills Worship Platform offers a panoramic view. My understanding is to first visit the main cave of the Western Hills in the morning, taking advantage of fewer people to carefully appreciate the Buddha, and in the afternoon go to the Eastern Hills Platform for a distant view, where the light and angles are best for photos; walking along both sides of the Yi River requires backtracking, so a comfortable pair of shoes can save a lot of effort.

Tips: Visiting the grottoes mainly involves walking and climbing stairs, so it is recommended to wear non-slip and comfortable shoes and travel light. Pay attention to your footing along both sides of the Yi River. Tourists generally report that most find the Vairocana Buddha the most impressive, and the Western Hills at sunset have the best light for photos; walking along both sides of the Yi River requires backtracking, so wear comfortable shoes and allow half a day. Considering the actual situation, when joining a tour, the most important thing is not to just rush through; listening to the guide is the essence. The cultural stories behind each attraction are often more memorable than photos, so ask the guide if you don’t understand something on site.

Day 3: Taihang Grand Canyon

Set off early from the hotel directly to Taihang Grand Canyon, first listen to the guide's explanation of the background and highlights, then explore freely at a leisurely pace and take extra photos according to your interests; after lunch, take a short rest, and return to the hotel in the evening to conserve energy for the next day.

Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is Taihang Grand Canyon. Taihang Grand Canyon stretches across the junction of Shanxi, Hebei, and Henan provinces, Red Flag Canal passes through the mountains, connecting Taohuagu Valley, Wangxiang Cliff, and Taihang Sky Road, showcasing both grandeur and beauty—it is a concentrated display of Taihang scenery. Taohuagu Valley is famous for its waterfalls and streams, Wangxiang Cliff is known for its cliffside walkways, and Taihang Sky Road allows visitors to take sightseeing buses to view the entire canyon. In spring, the mountains are full of blooming flowers; in autumn, the forests are ablaze with colors, with each season offering unique sights. My understanding is that the scenic area is large and spots are spread out, so it’s essential to plan your route and prioritize the main attractions; hold onto railings in dangerous cliff areas, and those with fear of heights should proceed according to their capability.

Tips: The canyon trails are close to water and cliffs, so do not cross barriers or play in dangerous areas, and watch over accompanying children. Visitors generally comment that Taohuagu Valley’s water features are serene, Taihang Sky Road is thrilling, and every step offers a new view; note that the sightseeing bus must be taken, as weather significantly affects the experience. In practice, to enjoy authentic food, go deeper into the alleys; the lineup at the main gate is long and the taste is average. For souvenirs, ask about prices and compare—local supermarkets often offer more genuine products.
