Day 1: Longmen Grottoes

Today’s tour of Longmen Grottoes is recommended to take half a day: connect the main cave of the West Mountain, the viewing platform of the East Mountain, and Bailian in Xiangshan Temple in a line, and follow the guide to understand the stories of the Northern Wei and the flourishing Tang Dynasty behind the stone carvings; return in the evening to rest.

Attraction Introduction: A highlight arranged in the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes, Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliffs along both sides of the Yi River in the south of Luoyang city, continuously constructed since Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang, and went through the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, and several other dynasties. There are currently more than 2,300 grottoes, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscription plaques. The most spectacular is the Vairocana Buddha of Fenshansi Temple, over seventeen meters high, with a full face and compassionate eyes, said to have been carved in the likeness of Wu Zetian, representing the pinnacle of stone carving art in the flourishing Tang Dynasty. Alongside Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Yungang in Datong, it is known as one of China’s three major grottoes and is also a World Cultural Heritage. When visiting, walk along the Yi River path from the West Mountain grottoes down south; Binyang Three Caves, Wanfo Cave, and Lotus Cave each have their own highlights. Cross the bridge to the East Mountain Buddhist Platform for a panoramic view. My understanding is to first see the main cave of the West Mountain in the morning and enjoy the Buddha statue while it’s less crowded, and visit the East Mountain viewing platform in the afternoon for the best lighting and angles for photos; walking along both sides of the Yi River requires retracing your steps, so a pair of comfortable shoes saves a lot of effort.

Tips: The grotto scenic area has strong UV rays, so bring a sun hat and sunscreen on sunny days. The visit route is relatively long, so remember to stay hydrated. Most visitors report that the Vairocana Buddha is the most impressive, the West Mountain has the best lighting for photos at sunset; walking along both sides of the Yi River requires retracing your steps, so comfortable shoes and reserving half a day are recommended. Regarding shopping, don't be impulsive; if you see a "limited-time offer," calm down for three minutes first; if you really want to buy souvenirs, choose a legitimate store and keep receipts for peace of mind.

Day 2: Jiguan Cave

Morning tour: Enter the karst cave to see stalactites of various shapes; have lunch nearby at noon; in the afternoon, you can visit in continuation, the cave and the gorge complement each other, and return in the evening.

Attraction Introduction: Today’s itinerary includes one attraction, which is the karst cave in Luanchuan. Inside the cave, stalactites come in a variety of forms; stalagmites, stone pillars, and stone flowers appear in stunning colors under the lighting, with a constant temperature all year round, warm in winter and cool in summer. The attractions inside the cave are dense, changing scenery with every step. With a guide’s explanation, you can understand the astonishing geological changes over hundreds of millions of years. Together with the gorge, the cave complements each other, forming a classic geological wonder route in western Henan. My understanding is, when entering the cave, follow the guide. The formation and naming of the stalactites are very interesting; it’s easy to miss the highlights if you look on your own. The cave floor is slippery, and some areas are low, so wear non-slip shoes and watch your head.

Tips: Many mountain paths are slippery, especially when going downhill, pay attention to shifting your center of gravity back and slowing your steps; you can bring a pair of knee pads. Visitors generally feedback that most think the cave is worth a special visit; it is recommended to slow down, follow the guide for explanations, and leave time for the most impressive details and the best photo spots. Based on the actual situation, keep your ID and wallet separate, take photos of important documents for backup on your phone. In case of loss, you can quickly replace them without delaying your trip.

Day 3: Free activities

Start early in the morning at Chongdugou, enjoy the cool weather while walking along the bamboo forest trail and viewing the waterfall clusters, which is suitable for a leisurely family outing; in the afternoon, there is free time for activities, for catching up on photos or taking a short rest, and return in the evening.

Tips: The biggest concern during free time is being caught off guard, so it is recommended to keep your documents and cash separate and confirm the meeting time and place with the guide in advance. Tourists generally report that most visitors use their free day to sleep in naturally, then go sightseeing, eating, or taking photos, leading to a very relaxed experience. In practical terms, avoid impulsive shopping, and if you see a "limited-time offer," take three minutes to calm down first; if you really want to buy souvenirs, stick to reputable stores and keep your receipts for peace of mind.
