Day 1: Wangcheng Park

Today the theme is Wangcheng Park. Avoid peak crowds and enter the park at off-peak times, explore in depth along the recommended route; have lunch nearby to enjoy local flavors, spend the afternoon at leisure or join the guide for additional sightseeing, and check in at the hotel in the evening to rest.

Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights arranged in the itinerary is Wangcheng Park. Wangcheng Park is located in Luoyang. It is named because it is situated on the ruins of the Eastern Zhou Royal City and has been one of the main venues for the annual Chinese Luoyang Peony Culture Festival. It is also the city park most familiar to the citizens of Luoyang. Every April, famous peonies such as Yao Huang, Wei Zi, and Zhao Fen bloom in competition, creating a spectacular display of various colors. The park also preserves the ruins of the Zhou Royal City and a zoo, combining historical depth with leisure functions, making it a classic spot for tourists to visit the 'Peony Flower City.' My understanding is that if you come during the peony season (April), this place must be included in your itinerary. Early in the morning, the crowds are few, and the peonies are most delicate with dew; outside the blooming season, it is more suitable for a leisurely walk.

Tips: Popular attractions in the park often have long queues. Upon entry, first pick up a map and performance schedule, and prioritize the must-see attractions. Visitors generally agree that most think Wangcheng Park is worth visiting specifically. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide for explanations, and leave time for the details and photo spots that impress you most. Considering the actual situation, for the best photos, go early or late—early morning has fewer people and soft light, and dusk offers a golden glow, while midday light is harsh and crowded, so resting then is more worthwhile.

Day 2: Longmen Grottoes

In the morning, head to Longmen Grottoes, stroll along the Yihe River Trail from the West Mountain Caves to closely view the Vairocana Buddha of Fengxian Temple, then cross the bridge to the East Mountain Worship Terrace to enjoy a panoramic view; at noon, taste the Luoyang water banquet, and in the afternoon, visit Xiangshan Temple and Baiyuan, returning to the hotel in the evening.

Attraction Introduction: A highlight in the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliffs along both sides of the Yihe River in the south of Luoyang city, with construction continuing since Emperor Xiaowen of Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang. It went through several dynasties including Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang. Currently, there are more than 2,300 cave niches, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 stone inscriptions and epitaphs preserved. The most breathtaking is the Vairocana Buddha of Fengxian Temple, over seventeen meters tall, with a full face and compassionate eyes, said to be modeled on Empress Wu Zetian’s appearance, representing the pinnacle of Tang Dynasty stone carving art. Together with Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Yungang Grottoes in Datong, it is considered one of China’s three major grottoes, and also a World Cultural Heritage site. During the visit, walk south along the Yihe River Trail from the West Mountain Caves; Binyang Three Caves, Wanfo Cave, and Lotus Cave all have their highlights. Crossing the bridge to the East Mountain Worship Terrace offers a full panoramic view. My understanding is to first see the main caves on the West Mountain in the morning, taking advantage of fewer people to appreciate the Buddha closely; in the afternoon, go to the East Mountain terrace to look at the panorama, where the light and angle are best for photos. Walks along both sides of the Yihe River require retracing the path, so a pair of comfortable shoes can save a lot of effort.

Tips: The grotto scenic area has strong UV rays, so bring a sun hat and sunscreen on sunny days. The route is relatively long, so remember to stay hydrated. Visitors generally report that most people feel the Vairocana Buddha is the most impressive, and the West Mountain at sunset has the best light for photos. Walking along both sides of the Yihe River requires backtracking, so comfortable shoes and half a day are recommended. Considering practical circumstances, dehydration is most concerning on long trips, so carry a water bottle and take small sips often. On the first night in a plateau or mountain area, avoid washing your hair or taking a long bath to give your body some time to adapt.

Day 3: Baiyun Mountain

Early in the morning, climb [0], first go up to Yuhuangding to watch the sunrise over the sea of clouds, then visit Jiulong Waterfall; in the afternoon, take a leisurely walk along the forest trail. It’s a cool escape in summer and a place to enjoy red leaves in autumn, returning in the evening.

Attraction Introduction: This stop takes you to [0], located in the heart of the Funiu Mountains in Song County. From Yuhuangding, you can view the sunrise over the sea of clouds. The area has a high forest coverage and abundant negative oxygen ions, making it a natural big oxygen bar. Within the scenic area, Jiulong Waterfall and the High Mountain Peony Garden each have their unique features. It’s a rare high-mountain resort-style scenic spot that’s great for cooling off in summer and enjoying red leaves in autumn. You can connect the sites via cable car or scenic shuttle bus. The mountaintop offers wide views, with clouds and mist creating a fairyland-like scenery. In my understanding, summer is the best time to come for cooling off, as the mountain’s coolness sharply contrasts with the city’s heat; waking up early to climb Yuhuangding for the sunrise requires some luck, but even if you don’t catch the sunrise, the morning mist over the mountains is beautiful enough.

Tips: Many mountain paths are slippery, and going downhill requires especially paying attention to shifting your weight back and slowing your steps. Bring a pair of knee pads if needed. Visitors generally feedback that most people think [0] is worth visiting specifically. It’s recommended to slow down, follow the guide for explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the best photo spots. Depending on the situation, be time-conscious, arrive five to ten minutes early for regrouping, as it’s better for people to wait for the vehicle than for the vehicle to wait for people, so that no one is left waiting for you.
