Luoyang 4-Day Tour: Chongdu Valley & Baiyun Mountain
Luoyang 4-day tour covering Chongdu Valley and Baiyun Mountain and Red Flag Canal. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Chongdugou
In the morning, take a swim along the Jinji River and Dicui River to see bamboo forests and waterfalls; at noon, try wild vegetables and farmhouse meals; in the afternoon, stroll through villages in western Henan and enjoy the coolness typical of Jiangnan water towns.
Attraction Introduction: This stop is at Chongdugou, located in Luanchuan. Featuring tens of thousands of acres of bamboo forests, cascading waterfalls, streams, and the farming culture of western Henan, it is a rare 'Jiangnan water-town' style summer resort. The scenic area is divided into two sections, Jinji River and Dicui River. Jinji River is known for its waterfalls, with splashing water that is refreshing and pleasant; Dicui River is a continuous bamboo forest, where walking brings a full view of lush green. Here, you can stay at a farmhouse, taste mountain vegetables, and experience authentic village life in western Henan, with a slow pace—perfect for family leisure and summer retreats. My understanding is to slow down the pace, don’t rush to see every attraction—walking in the bamboo forest or sitting by the stream is the proper way to enjoy Chongdugou; visiting in summer is the most comfortable, so cool that you won’t want to leave.
Tips: The water-adjacent paths in the gorge are slippery, be sure to wear non-slip water shoes or sneakers, and protect valuables like your phone from water. Visitors generally feedback that most think Chongdugou is worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow down, follow the guide’s commentary, and leave time to appreciate the details that move you and the best photo spots. According to your actual situation, allocate your physical energy with reserve; tackle the main highlights in the morning when you are fresh, and slow the pace in the afternoon—don’t exhaust yourself on the first day, or you will have no energy for the following days.
Day 2: Baiyun Mountain
Early in the morning, climb Yuhuang Peak to watch the sea of clouds at sunrise, then visit Jiulong Waterfall; in the afternoon, take a leisurely walk on the forest trail—summer is perfect for escaping the heat, and autumn for enjoying the red leaves—return in the evening.
Scenic Spot Introduction: On this stop, come to Baiyun Mountain, located in the heart of the Funiu Mountains in Song County. From Yuhuang Peak, you can view the sunrise over the sea of clouds. With a high forest coverage and abundant negative oxygen ions, it is a natural oxygen-rich area. Within the scenic area, Jiulong Waterfall and the Alpine Peony Garden each have their own charm. It is ideal for summer escapes and autumn foliage viewing, making it one of Henan's few high-altitude resort-type attractions. You can connect the sites via cable car or scenic shuttle bus. From the mountaintop, the view is expansive, with mist swirling around, creating a fairyland-like atmosphere. In my opinion, summer is the best time to come to escape the heat—the coolness of the mountains sharply contrasts with the city’s summer heat. Getting up early to watch the sunrise over the sea of clouds at Yuhuang Peak requires a bit of luck, but even if you don’t see the sunrise, the mountain scenery in the morning fog is already beautiful enough.
Tips: There is a large temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains, and the wind on the summit is strong, so a windproof jacket and warm inner layers are necessary. Visitors generally report that most believe Baiyun Mountain is worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow your pace, follow the guide for explanations, and leave time for the details that move you most and the photo spots that are most scenic. Respect the local customs according to the actual situation, dress appropriately when visiting religious sites, and avoid pointing around casually. A simple greeting can exchange for goodwill.
Day 3: Red Flag Canal
Today's red tour involves following the guide to visit the Youth Cave and the Divider Garden, understanding the heroic feats of the 1960s; in the afternoon, you can explore the surrounding area, and in the evening, rest.
Attraction Introduction: One of the highlights of the itinerary is Red Flag Canal. Red Flag Canal is an 'artificial river in the sky' carved by the people of Linzhou on the cliffs of the Taihang Mountains in the 1960s. It spans over 1,500 kilometers in total, with 1,250 mountain peaks leveled, more than 150 aqueducts built, and over 200 tunnels excavated, taking nearly ten years to complete. It stands as a monument to the Chinese nation’s spirit of self-improvement. The Youth Cave is the most dangerous section of the entire route, excavated on sheer cliffs by 300 young volunteers; the Divider Garden and Red Flag Canal Memorial Hall fully tell the arduous story of the canal’s construction. This place combines red education with the grandeur of the Taihang Mountains and is now also a breathtaking cultural attraction. My understanding is that visiting the memorial hall first to learn the background of the canal, followed by the Youth Cave, allows you to truly grasp the significance of this canal; when walking along the canal, go at your own pace, wear anti-slip shoes, and watch your step.
Kind Reminders: Many mountain paths are slippery, especially on downhill sections—keep your center of gravity back and slow your pace. Knee pads are advisable. Visitors generally note that the 'artificial river in the sky' has a strong symbolic significance, resonating more with middle-aged visitors; it is recommended to listen to the explanation in the exhibition hall to understand that period of history. In practice, the risk of tour groups is rushing through the sites—listening to the explanations is the essence, as the cultural stories behind each attraction are often more memorable than photos. If you have questions, ask the guide on the spot.
Day 4: Return
Transfer to the departure terminal per your booked train or flight; keep travel documents and tickets in your carry-on.
