Luoyang 4-Day Tour: Laojun Mountain & Chongdu Valley
Luoyang 4-day tour covering Laojun Mountain and Chongdu Valley and Erlitou Site. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Laojun Mountain
Today's Laojun Mountain in-depth tour: after taking the cable car up the mountain, focus on seeing the Golden Summit, the Ten-Mile Painted Screen, and the glass viewing platform, and follow the guide to learn about Taoist culture and the geology of Funiu Mountain; In the afternoon, descend to rest and build up energy for the next day.
Attraction introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Laojun Mountain, located in Luanchuan County Luoyang. It is the main peak of Funiu Mountain and a famous Taoist mountain, said to be the place where Laozi, the founder of Taoism, retired for cultivation. The Golden Summit Daoist temple cluster stands atop a peak over 2,000 meters above sea level. Its golden tiles and red walls and surging sea of clouds are renowned as "a spectacular feast on earth and a glimpse of the flourishing world." The Ten-Mile Painted Screen is the highlight of the entire trip. A high-altitude plank road suspended above a sheer cliff changes views with every step, offering panoramic views of peaks, forests, sea of clouds, and sunrises. You can take a two-level cable car up the mountain; on sunny days, you can watch the sea of clouds and sunrise from the summit. In winter, it is a highly popular snow-viewing spot in the Central Plains. My understanding is: be sure to take the cable car up the mountain early to seize the golden summit and the beautiful scenery of the Ten-Mile Painting Screen; At the summit, the wind is strong and the temperature low; a windbreaker and thermos bottle are standard, and the glass observation deck is a must-have.
Friendly reminder: The mountain roads are slippery, so be sure to shift your center of gravity and slow down downhill. Knee pads are recommended. Visitors generally report that the sea of clouds and sunrise at the Golden Summit are recognized as the main highlights, with many people staying at the summit waiting for dawn. Reminder: The temperature difference at the summit is large and cable car queues are long, so be sure to arrive early during peak season. Considering actual conditions, mountain weather can change quickly; a windproof jacket is more practical than anything; Choose shoes that are non-slip and comfortable; avoid taking a few photos to avoid twisting your ankle.
Day 2: Chongdugou
Morning tour Chongdugou, watching bamboo forests and waterfalls along Jinji River and Dicui River; Have wild vegetable farmhouse meals at noon, and stroll through western Henan villages in the afternoon to enjoy the coolness of a Jiangnan water town.
Attraction introduction: This stop is Chongdugou. Chongdugou is located in Luanchuan, famous for its vast bamboo forests, waterfalls, and the agricultural charm of western Henan. It is one of the few "Jiangnan water town" style summer leisure spots in Henan. The scenic area is divided into Jinji River and Dicui River. Jinji River is famous for its clusters of waterfalls, with splashing water that is cool and pleasant; Dicui River is a continuous bamboo forest, with lush greenery stretching through. Here, you can stay in farmhouses, taste wild vegetables, and experience authentic mountain village life in western Henan. The pace is relaxed, making it especially suitable for family trips and summer vacations. My understanding is that slowing down the pace and not rushing to see attractions — walking through the bamboo forest or sitting by the stream is the right way to experience Chongdugou; Summer is the most comfortable, so cool you don't want to walk.
Friendly reminder: The canyon's waterside trails are slippery, so be sure to wear non-slip river shoes or sneakers, and keep your phone and other valuables waterproof. Most visitors generally say Chongdugou is worth a special trip. It's recommended to slow down and follow the guide to listen to the explanations, saving time for the details that impress you most and the best camera angles. Based on actual circumstances, don't shop impulsively. If you see a "limited-time offer," calm down for three minutes; If you really want to bring souvenirs, make sure to buy reputable stores and keep your receipts for peace of mind.
Day 3: Erlitou
Set off from the hotel early in the morning to Erlitou, listen to the guide's explanation of background and highlights, then enjoy a leisurely tour and take photos based on your interests; After lunch, rest briefly and return to the hotel in the evening to build up energy for the next day.
Attraction introduction: Today's itinerary includes Erlitou attractions. The Erlitou site is located in Luoyang Yanshi, praised by scholars as the "Earliest China." It is a large capital site from the mid to late Xia Dynasty, unearthing turquoise dragon-shaped artifacts, bronze jue, bronze tripods, and other heavy artifacts, revealing the appearance of China's first royal capital. The turquoise dragon-shaped artifact is made from over 2,000 turquoise fragments inlaid and is known as "China's First Dragon," serving as important evidence of Chinese dragon worship. Erlitou The site museum presents the site with an archaeological sense and is an unmissable stop for studying the origins of Chinese civilization. My understanding is that before visiting, one should first understand the academic controversy surrounding the "Xia Capital," then look at the exhibits for a deeper understanding; The museum's exhibits are carefully crafted and worth taking your time.
Friendly reminder: In mountainous areas, there is a large temperature difference between morning and evening, and the wind at the summit is strong. A windproof jacket and warm inner layer are very necessary. Visitors generally report that most think Erlitou is worth a special trip. It is recommended to slow down and follow the guide to listen to the explanations, saving time for the most impressive details and the best camera angles. Based on actual circumstances, separate documents and wallets; take photos of important documents and keep them on your phone for backup. If lost, you can quickly reissue them without delaying your trip.
Day 4: Return
Transfer to the departure terminal per your booked train or flight; keep travel documents and tickets in your carry-on.
