From Luoyang | 2 Days 1 Night | Shopping-free | Landscape & kung fu
Highlights
Day 1 Luoyang – Yuntai Mountain
Morning drive to Yuntai Mountain in Jiaozuo, visiting Red Stone Gorge and Tanpu Gorge. Overnight near Jiaozuo/Yuntai. [Attraction guide] [Yuntai Mountain] Yuntai Mountain in Xiuwu (Jiaozuo) is a Global Geopark and 5A site known for its red cliffs and clear pools. Red Stone Gorge, Tanpu Gorge, Quanpu Gorge, Zhuyu Peak and Macaque Valley form the core, linked by internal shuttles across a large area. The undisputed highlight is Red Stone Gorge's red cliffs and clear water; Tanpu Gorge's "a spring every few steps" is refreshingly cool, and in high water you can see the Yuntai Sky Falls, while Zhuyu Peak suits a climb. The park is huge and shuttle-based, so one day is rushed—stay at the service zone for two days; Zhuyu Peak has many steps and parking is hard in peak season, so staying inside is safest; weather changes fast, bring rain gear, and don't feed the macaques. It's Henan's landscape icon—Red Stone Gorge is a must and the most photogenic. One day only scratches the surface; two days is comfortable: Red Stone + Tanpu on day one, Zhuyu on day two. Friendly for families and photographers, but expect plenty of walking.
Day 2 Shaolin Temple – Return to Luoyang
Morning drive to Shaolin Temple in Dengfeng for the kung-fu show, main monastery and Pagoda Forest; return to Luoyang in the afternoon. [Attraction guide] [Shaolin Temple] At Shaoshi Mountain in Dengfeng, Shaolin Temple is the cradle of Zen and Shaolin kung fu. The core is the Main Monastery (gate, Mahavira Hall, Standing-in-Snow Pavilion), the Pagoda Forest (burial stupas of masters) and the kung-fu show, plus Damo Cave and Chuzu Hermitage. The show and the Pagoda Forest carry the most weight. Commerce around the temple is heavy—buy as you wish; the show runs on a fixed schedule, check it first; many steps, wear good shoes; the Sanhuangzhai hike is a different entrance, don't confuse them; go early to dodge big groups, and watch guides for shopping detours. As the Zen-kung-fu cradle, the show is worth the ticket—just see the core (monastery + forest + show) and skip the rest. Good for kids (kung fu) and elders (Zen), but don't follow the sales pitch.
