4-Day Western Henan Highlights: Yuntai + Shaolin + Laojun

Highlights
Day 1 Luoyang – Yuntai Mountain
Drive to Yuntai Mountain in Jiaozuo, visiting Red Stone Gorge and Tanpu Gorge. Overnight near Jiaozuo/Yuntai. [Attraction guide] [Yuntai Mountain] Yuntai Mountain in Xiuwu (Jiaozuo) is a Global Geopark and 5A site known for its red cliffs and clear pools. Red Stone Gorge, Tanpu Gorge, Quanpu Gorge, Zhuyu Peak and Macaque Valley form the core, linked by internal shuttles across a large area. The undisputed highlight is Red Stone Gorge's red cliffs and clear water; Tanpu Gorge's "a spring every few steps" is refreshingly cool, and in high water you can see the Yuntai Sky Falls, while Zhuyu Peak suits a climb. The park is huge and shuttle-based, so one day is rushed—stay at the service zone for two days; Zhuyu Peak has many steps and parking is hard in peak season, so staying inside is safest; weather changes fast, bring rain gear, and don't feed the macaques. It's Henan's landscape icon—Red Stone Gorge is a must and the most photogenic. One day only scratches the surface; two days is comfortable: Red Stone + Tanpu on day one, Zhuyu on day two. Friendly for families and photographers, but expect plenty of walking.
Day 2 Shaolin Temple – Luoyang
Morning at Shaolin Temple for the kung-fu show and Pagoda Forest; afternoon return to Luoyang. [Attraction guide] [Shaolin Temple] At Shaoshi Mountain in Dengfeng, Shaolin Temple is the cradle of Zen and Shaolin kung fu. The core is the Main Monastery (gate, Mahavira Hall, Standing-in-Snow Pavilion), the Pagoda Forest (burial stupas of masters) and the kung-fu show, plus Damo Cave and Chuzu Hermitage. The show and the Pagoda Forest carry the most weight. Commerce around the temple is heavy—buy as you wish; the show runs on a fixed schedule, check it first; many steps, wear good shoes; the Sanhuangzhai hike is a different entrance, don't confuse them; go early to dodge big groups, and watch guides for shopping detours. As the Zen-kung-fu cradle, the show is worth the ticket—just see the core (monastery + forest + show) and skip the rest. Good for kids (kung fu) and elders (Zen), but don't follow the sales pitch.
Day 3 Luoyang – Laojun Mountain
Drive to Laojun Mountain in Luanchuan, climb the Golden Summit and Ten-li Painting Screen. Overnight in Luanchuan. [Attraction guide] [Laojun Mountain] In Luanchuan (Luoyang), Laojun Mountain is part of the Funiu Nature Reserve; its Jade Emperor Peak rises to 2,217 m and is named for Laozi's retreat. The core sights are the Golden Summit temples (Golden Hall, Jade Emperor Peak, Liangbao Terrace, Jade Emperor Temple), the Ten-li Painting Screen cliff walkway and a glass viewing platform, with cable cars for both ways and a loop trail along the Painting Screen. Not to be missed: the sunrise sea of clouds over the Golden Summit on a clear morning, and the sweeping view of the Funiu range from the Painting Screen—She Shen Cliff and the glass platform are also great for photos. Practical notes: the summit runs 8–10°C colder, so bring a windproof jacket; cable-car queues are long in peak season, so go early; wear non-slip shoes for the many steps, and boardwalks may close in rain/snow/fog—check the weather first; food on the mountain is pricey, so bring your own water. All in all, this is a rare large golden temple complex in the north and the sunrise clouds are well worth it—one of my favorite mountain escapes. Go before 7 am to beat the crowds; take both cable cars if less fit, or hike the Painting Screen loop. Winter snow is beautiful but slippery.
Day 4 Chongdu Valley – Return to Luoyang
Morning at Chongdu Valley for waterfalls and bamboo, cooling off; return to Luoyang in the afternoon to finish. [Attraction guide] [Chongdu Valley] Chongdu Valley in Luanchuan (Luoyang) is famed for water, bamboo and waterfalls—nicknamed "Jiuzhaigou of the North." It splits into three zones: Jinji River, Dicui River and Water-Curtain Fairy Palace. Feihong Falls, the Xiefen Cliff waterfall cluster and the Dicui River bamboo sea are the signatures, with a farm village and grass-sliding for a relaxed pace. The wet paths are slippery—hold children's hands; summer crowds are big, so staying inside the park saves time; after rain it's slick and mosquitoes are abundant, bring repellent. It's a classic water-play summer escape with mature facilities and a slow pace, great for families. Pair it with Laojun Mountain for a "mountain + water" Luanchuan combo—spend a full day, and don't just hit the falls; the bamboo walk is the real gem.
