Luoyang 7-Day Tour: Longmen Grottoes & Henan Museum
Luoyang 7-day tour covering Longmen Grottoes and Henan Museum and Shaolin Temple. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Longmen Grottoes
Gather in the morning and depart for Longmen Grottoes, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for photos and rest; enjoy a local specialty lunch at noon, check in to the hotel in the evening to recharge for the next day’s itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliffs along both sides of the Yi River in the south of Luoyang city, continuously constructed since the relocation of the Northern Wei Emperor Xiaowen to Luoyang, and went through the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, and multiple other dynasties. Currently, more than 2,300 caves, over 100,000 statues, and more than 2,800 inscriptions remain. The most astonishing feature is the Vairocana Buddha of Fengxian Temple, over seventeen meters tall, with a full face and compassionate eyes, said to be modeled after Empress Wu Zetian, representing the pinnacle of Tang dynasty stone carving art. Together with the Dunhuang Mogao Caves and Datong Yungang Grottoes, it is one of China’s three major grottoes and a World Cultural Heritage site. During the visit, walk south along the Yi River from the Western Hills Grottoes; each of the Binyang Three Caves, Ten Thousand Buddha Cave, and Lotus Cave offers unique highlights. Crossing the bridge to the East Hills Worship Terrace provides a panoramic view. My understanding is to first visit the main caves of the Western Hills in the morning and enjoy the Buddha while there are fewer people, then go to the East Hills in the afternoon for a distant view—the lighting and angle are best for photos; walking along both sides of the Yi River requires retracing steps, so comfortable shoes can save a lot of effort.
Friendly Tips: Visiting the grottoes mainly involves walking and stairs; it is recommended to wear non-slip comfortable shoes and travel light. Watch your step along both sides of the Yi River. Most visitors have reported that the Vairocana Buddha is the most impressive, the sunset at the Western Hills offers the best photo lighting, and walking along both sides of the Yi River requires retracing steps. Comfortable shoes and reserving half a day are recommended. Considering the actual situation, joining a tour is best enjoyed slowly; listening to the guide is the essence. The cultural stories behind each site are often more memorable than photos, and don’t hesitate to ask the guide on the spot if you don’t understand something.
Day 2: Henan Museum
Gather in the morning and depart for Henan Museum, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for photos and rest; enjoy a local specialty meal at noon, check into the hotel in the evening, and recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Henan Museum. Henan Museum is a landmark of Central Plains civilization, housing more than 170,000 cultural relics, and presents 'Early China' following the main line of 'Glorious China, Choosing the Central Capital'. Among the treasures, the Jiahu bone flute is the earliest playable instrument discovered so far, rewriting the history of Chinese music; the Duling square tripod and cloud-patterned bronze zun represent the pinnacle of Shang and Zhou bronze casting; the Fuhao owl-shaped zun has a heroic form, telling the legend of Fuhao, the wife of Shang king Wuding; there are also national treasures such as the Lotus and Crane square pot and Wu Zetian's gold slips. It is recommended to follow a guide or rent an audio guide, and you can overview the main thread of Chinese civilization in two hours. My understanding is to first head straight to a few main treasures for a thrilling experience, then follow the timeline for a systematic tour; crowds are normal in front of national treasure displays, so learning the locations of the key exhibits in advance can save time and let you go straight to the highlights.
Tips: Flash photography is prohibited in the museum, do not touch the exhibits, and stay quiet while following the guide. Visitors generally agree that most think Henan Museum is worth a special visit; it is recommended to slow down, follow the guide, and leave time for the details that impress you most and the best photo spots. In practice, for authentic local food, venture into the alleys, as main entrances often have long lines and average taste; for specialties, ask prices before comparing, local supermarkets are usually more authentic.
Day 3: Shaolin Temple
Gather in the morning and depart for Shaolin Temple, follow the guide to tour the main attractions, leaving plenty of time for photos and rest; enjoy local specialty dishes at noon, check in to the hotel in the evening, and rest up to prepare for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Shaolin Temple attractions. Shaolin Temple is located at the foot of Wuru Peak of Shaoshi Mountain in Dengfeng Mount Song, founded in the 19th year of the Taihe era of the Northern Wei Dynasty (AD 495). It is both the ancestral home of Zen Buddhism and the birthplace of Shaolin martial arts, with a history of over 1,500 years. The main highlights are concentrated in three areas: the Changzhu Courtyard along the central axis includes the Shanmen, the Heavenly King Hall, the Mahavira Hall, the Sutra Repository, and the Lixue Pavilion, with halls and ancient steles laid out along the way; the Pagoda Forest is the largest existing ancient pagoda complex in China, with over 200 brick and stone tomb pagodas from the Tang, Song, to Qing dynasties, each corresponding to a high-ranking monk; the Bodhidharma Cave on Wuru Peak is said to be the place where Bodhidharma meditated facing the wall for nine years. The Martial Arts Hall hosts daily Shaolin martial arts performances at set times, showcasing punching methods, weaponry, and hard Qigong at their finest. My understanding is, first follow the guide along the central axis of the temple, then look around at your own pace; please remain quiet in the Pagoda Forest and walk around the pagodas; for the martial arts performance, enter fifteen minutes in advance to secure a good seat.
Tips: There are many incense stalls around the temple, so purchase incense as needed and consume rationally. Visitors generally report that the martial arts performance is most popular with families, while the Pagoda Forest and Chuzu'an are often overlooked along the way; note that commercial elements in the scenic area are obvious, so check prices for vegetarian meals and nearby expenses in advance. According to the actual situation, allocate your physical energy with some reserve: tackle the main attractions in the morning when you are energetic, slow down in the afternoon, and don’t exhaust yourself on the first day, or you will have no energy for the following days.

The Yuntai Mountain ticket and the shuttle pass run for three days together, and this route uses all three, one gorge per day. November still pays the high season rate, which only drops on the first of December, so the crowds have thinned while the price has not moved yet.

Luoyang Departure: Laojun Mountain, Chongdugou and Jiguan Cave, 4 Days 3 Nights
The Laojun Mountain ticket holds for two days, so this route splits the climb in half: the cliff walkway on the first afternoon, the summit and its cloud early the next morning. Between them, a bamboo valley and a limestone cave that sits at eighteen degrees when the mountain air turns cold.

Luoyang Departure: Wanxian Mountain, Guoliang Village and Baligou, 5 Days 4 Nights
Five days in the southern Taihang range, walking all three valleys of Wanxian Mountain and then the water at Baligou. The Guoliang tunnel runs 1,250 metres along the cliff with thirty five windows cut through its outer wall, so the valley flashes past the whole way in.

Three days across the three teachings of Mount Song. Shaolin for Chan Buddhism, Songyang Academy for the Confucian tradition, Zhongyue Temple for Daoism, and on the last morning a ride out to Gaocheng for a Yuan dynasty observatory that most visitors to Dengfeng never reach.
