Anyang 4-Day Tour: Longmen Grottoes & Jiguan Cave
Anyang 4-day tour covering Longmen Grottoes and Jiguan Cave and Shaolin Temple. Sightseeing tickets and shuttle bus included.
Highlights
Day 1: Longmen Grottoes
Gather in the morning and depart for Longmen Grottoes, following the tour guide to visit the core attractions, allowing ample time for photos and rest; enjoy a local specialty lunch at noon, check in to the hotel in the evening, and recharge for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: A highlight of the itinerary is Longmen Grottoes. Longmen Grottoes was carved on the cliff faces on both sides of the Yi River in the south of Luoyang, continuously constructed since Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei moved the capital to Luoyang, spanning the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, and Tang dynasties. There are now over 2,300 caves, more than 100,000 statues, and over 2,800 inscriptions and epitaphs. The most breathtaking is the Vairocana Buddha of Fengxian Temple, which is over 17 meters tall, with a full face and eyes full of compassion, said to have been modeled after Empress Wu Zetian, representing the peak of Tang Dynasty stone carving art. Along with the Dunhuang Mogao Caves and the Yungang Grottoes in Datong, it is one of China’s three major grottoes and a World Cultural Heritage site. When visiting, walk south along the Yi River from the West Mountain Grottoes; each cave, such as Binyang Sandong, Wanfo Cave, and Lotus Cave, has its highlights. Cross the bridge to the East Mountain Worship Terrace for a panoramic view. My suggestion is to first visit the main West Mountain caves in the morning to appreciate the Great Buddha while it’s less crowded; in the afternoon, go to the East Mountain terrace for distant views, which offer the best light and angles for photos. Walking along both sides of the Yi River requires retracing your steps, so a comfortable pair of shoes can save a lot of effort.
Tips: Visiting the grottoes mainly involves walking and stairs, so it is recommended to wear non-slip, comfortable shoes and travel light. Pay attention to footing along the Yi River. Most tourists report that the Vairocana Buddha is the most striking, and the West Mountain at sunset provides the best photo lighting; walking along both sides of the Yi River requires retracing your steps, so comfortable shoes and reserving half a day are recommended. Considering the actual situation, the worst thing when joining a tour is rushing through the sights; listening to the guide is the essence, as the cultural stories behind each site are often more memorable than photos. Ask the guide immediately if anything is unclear.
Day 2: Jiguan Cave
Assemble in the morning and depart for Jiguan Cave, follow the tour guide to visit the main attractions, allowing ample time for photos and rest; enjoy the local specialty cuisine at noon, and check into the hotel in the evening to recharge for the next day’s itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today’s itinerary includes the Jiguan Cave attraction. Jiguan Cave is a karst cave in Luanchuan, with stalactites in various shapes and forms. Stalagmites, stone pillars, and stone flowers transform into splendid colors under the lights. The cave maintains a constant temperature all year round, warm in winter and cool in summer. Attractions inside the cave are dense, and as you move, the scenery changes; with the guide's explanation, you can understand the miraculous geological changes over hundreds of millions of years. It complements Longtan Grand Canyon’s one cave and one gorge, forming a classic geological wonder route in western Henan. My understanding is, when entering the cave, remember to follow the guide; the formation and naming of the stalactites are very interesting, and it’s easy to miss the highlights if you explore on your own. The cave floor is slippery, and some areas are low, so wear non-slip shoes and watch your head.
Tips: There is a large temperature difference in the mountains between morning and evening, and it can be windy at the summit, so a windproof jacket and warm inner layers are necessary. Tourists generally report that most consider Jiguan Cave worth a special visit. It is recommended to slow down, listen to the guide's explanations, and leave time for the details that impress you most and the best photo spots. According to your actual situation, if you want authentic food, go deeper into the alleys; the queues at the main entrance are long and the taste is average. For local specialties, ask for the price first and compare; local supermarkets are often more authentic.
Day 3: Shaolin Temple
Gather in the morning and depart for Shaolin Temple, follow the guide to tour the main attractions, leaving plenty of time for photos and rest; enjoy local specialty dishes at noon, check in to the hotel in the evening, and rest up to prepare for the next day's itinerary.
Attraction Introduction: Today's itinerary includes Shaolin Temple attractions. Shaolin Temple is located at the foot of Wuru Peak of Shaoshi Mountain in Dengfeng, first built in the 19th year of the Northern Wei Taihe period (495 AD). It is both the ancestral home of Zen Buddhism and the birthplace of Shaolin martial arts, with a history of over 1,500 years. The main highlights are concentrated in three areas: Changzhu Temple along the central axis features the Mountain Gate, Hall of Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, Sutra Library, and Lixue Pavilion, with halls and ancient steles arranged along the way; the Pagoda Forest is the largest existing ancient pagoda complex in China, with more than 200 brick-and-stone pagodas from the Tang, Song, and Qing dynasties of various shapes, each corresponding to a high-ranking monk; the Dharma Cave on Wuru Peak is traditionally considered the place where Bodhidharma meditated facing the wall for nine years. The Martial Arts Hall performs Shaolin martial arts shows at scheduled times every day, demonstrating punches, weaponry, and Qigong at their best. My understanding is to follow the guide along the central axis first and then explore in detail freely; keep quiet and walk around the pagodas when visiting the Pagoda Forest; arrive fifteen minutes early for the martial arts performance to get a good spot.
Tips: There are many incense vendors around the temple, so buy incense as needed and consume reasonably. Visitors generally find the martial arts performance most popular with families with children, while the Pagoda Forest and Chuzu Temple are often overlooked along the way; note that commercialization in the scenic area is obvious, so check prices for vegetarian meals and surrounding purchases beforehand. Based on actual conditions, allocate energy with some reserve—focus on major highlights in the morning when you are energetic, slow down in the afternoon, and avoid exhausting yourself on the first day to enjoy the following days.
Day 4: Return
Transfer to the departure terminal per your booked train or flight; keep travel documents and tickets in your carry-on.
